(IN ENGLISH HERE) Una leggenda. Uno dei migliori batteristi in circolazione… ha suonato con i grandi, la sua tecnica è fenomenale. Ma quanto non è seduto alla batteria è anche dannatamente divertente. Sorride sempre. Estremamente gentile. Ma è una specie di molla pronta a scattare: la sua energia è fuori controllo, è un mucchio di nervi compressi e sotto tensione, sempre pronto a picchiare su quelle pelli con una potenza atomica e divertimento senza fine. Vive per andare a suonare forte come se non ci fosse un domani. Ma la cosa non mi ha spaventato! Mi sono seduto con lui per un po’, prima del concerto, gli ho chiesto quel che mi passava per la testa. Mi ha risposto, sorriso, ci siamo fatti delle risate… ma ho percepito questa strana sensazione: le sue risposte erano così immediate, veloci e naturali… come se avesse saputo in anticipo cosa gli andavo a chiedere! La verità? Probabilmente entrambe le nostre menti funzionano a ritmo di rock’n’roll, perfettamente in linea, e quello che andrete a leggere qui sotto è una chiacchierata piena di semplice e pura passione per la musica più potente della storia dell’umanità! (QUI IN ITALIANO) A legend. One of the best drummer around… He drummed with the greatest, his skill is amazing. But when he is not sitting at the drum kit he is also damn funny. Always smiling. Extremely kind. But he is a live wire somehow: his energy can’t be controlled, he is a bag of top fuel excited nerves, ready to hammer that drum with atomic energy and endless fun. He lives to go there and drum the hell out of his body! But that didn’t scare me! I sat down with him for a while, before the gig, asked him whatever I wanted. He answered, smiled, we had a laugh… but I felt this strange sensation: his replies were so immediate and quick and natural… Like if he knew the questions in advance! The truth? Probably both our minds are rock’n’roll driven, fully synchronized, and what you read here below is a chat full of simple and pure passion for the most powerful music of the human history! (altro…)

Il 23 agosto 2018, il primo giorno del Beyond The Gates a Bergen, in Norvegia, era pieno di eventi ed occasioni che ruotavano attorno la musica ed il metal. Qualche ora prima che le porte si aprissero, la Season of Mist ha messo in piedi una listening session del nuovo album dei VREID, “Lifehunger”, presso il famoso Garage Rock Pub, in centro alla città. Poco prima di questo evento, l’etichetta ha rapito me, la fotografa e Jarle “Hváll” Kvåle, bassista e compositore della band: ci hanno spinti giù per le scale, nell’area concerti dell’interrato del locale, ovviamente vuota nel primo pomeriggio. Ma avevamo le birre, divani e molto spazio. Non ci è importato molto l’essere rapiti… proprio per nulla! Ma con un tempo limitato, in quanto Hváll doveva presenziare l’ascolto della musica che ha scritto… abbiamo dovuto fare in fretta e andare subito al sodo. Dovevamo parlare del nuovo album, in uscita a fine settembre… e per fortuna l’ho potuto un paio di vole, un’ora prima di recarmi all’appuntamento: e mentre parlavo con Hváll, sentivo ancora le vibrazioni del nuovo lavoro! The August 23rd 2018, was the first day of the Beyond The Gates. Bergen, in Norway, was packed with events, and stuff running around music and metal. Hours before the Gates beyond would open, Season of Mist set up a listening session of the new VREID album, “Lifehunger”, at the famous Garage Rock Pub in the center of the city. A little before the schedule time, the label kidnapped me, my photographer and Jarle “Hváll” Kvåle, bass player and composer of the band, and pushed us downstairs, in the empty venue in the pub’s underground. We had beers, sofas and plenty of space. We didn’t mind being kidnapped… not at all! But having a limited time, as Hváll would attend the listening session of the music he’d written… we had to go quickly to the core. We had to talk about the new album, out at the end of September… and luckly I could have two spins of it right one hour before the meeting: while I was talking to Hváll, I could still feel the vibes of the new beast! (Click here for English version) Band storica, emblematica, eclettica e di riferimento assoluto… nel bene e nel male. I Dimmu Borgir hanno avvicinato moltissima gente al black, gente che poi ha aperto gli occhi verso un ecosistema prima sconosciuto o semplicemente ignorato. In un soleggiato pomeriggio a Milano, dentro un pub, finisco tranquillamente seduto ad un tavolo con Shagrath, il vocalist e membro fondatore della band. Intervista tranquilla, anzi, direi una chiacchierata tra persone che la pensano allo stesso modo e che in un modo o nell’altro, hanno consacrato l’anima ad un genere musicale, con tutte le sue labirintiche deviazioni, evoluzioni, varianti… con un sacco di regole scritte o meno, pensieri espressi o meno, idee chiare o meno. Dopo quasi un decennio di silenzio discografico, Shagrath con estrema cortesia, gentilezza e pazienza accetta le mie domande le quali toccano un po’ la storia della band, il futuro della band, le regole della band, senza tralasciare un pizzico di provocazione. Shagrath si rivela una persona estremamente equilibrata, sincera, convinta della qualità del suo lavoro. L’artista dal quale ricevo la migliore descrizione di arte in assoluto. Non importa se amate la musica dei Dimmu Borgir o meno. Non importa se rispettiate la loro posizione sulla scena o meno. Se vi ritenete degli esseri intelligenti, leggete il loro punto di vista, senza rinchiudervi ciecamente nel vostro recinto mentale. Sincero, diretto, per nulla arrogante e senza face painting. Signore e Signori, questo è Shagrath: l’uomo, l’umano, l’artista. (altro…)

(Clicca qui per la versione in Italiano) A band with history, emblematic, the landmark for many… for better or for worse. Thanks to Dimmu Borgir a lot of people approached black metal, people that later opene their eyes towards a music ecosystem previously unknown or simply ignored. In a sunny afternoon in Milan, in a pub, I find myself peacefully sat down at a table with Shagrath, the lead vocalist and founding member of the band. A smooth interview, quiet, more something like a chat between two guys thinking the same way and that, in a way or the other, have sold their souls to a music genre, with all its labyrinthine deviations, evolutions, mutations… with a lot of written or not written rules, expressed or not expressed thoughts, clear or unclear ideas. After almost one decade of artistic silence, Shagrath, with extreme courtesy, kindness and patience, answers my questions, which do touch the history of the band, its future, the rules withing the band itself, without leaving aside a a provoking taste. Shagrath turns out to be an extremely balanced person, transparent, convinced of the quality of hiw own work. The artist from whom I get the best description of ‘art’ I ever had. It doesn’t matter if you love or hate the music of Dimmu Borgir. It doesn’t matter if you respect or not their position or role in the scene. If you consider yourself an intelligent being, well read their point of view, without blindly locking yourself inside your own mental fence. Sincere, straight forward, not arrogant at all and without any corpse paint. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Shagrath: the man, the human being and the artist.

Un punto di vista diverso. È stato strano parlare dei Cradle of Filth con qualcun altro che non sia Dani Filth. E nemmeno si tratta di uno dei componenti base della band come chitarristi o batterista. Ho avuto il piacere di incontrare Lindsay, voce femminile della band e tastierista sul palco. Ma considerando le tematiche gotiche ed erotiche trattate dalle canzoni di Dani, ho potuto osservare da un angolatura nuova e decisamente inusuale questa band vicina ai trent’anni di dominio! A different point of view. It was very strange talking about Cradle of Filth with somebody else who’s not Dani Filth. And not even a core member such as drummers or guitar players. I had the pleasure to spend some time with Lindsay, female vocals and onstage keyboard player of the band. But given the typical erotic gothic oriented thematics of Dani’s songs, it has been a pretty new and unusual angle from which looking at this band, getting close to the thirtieth of metal domination! Satyricon have played here last October and are coming back soon, the upcoming March. After 9 albums and over 25 years of career, is undoubtedly one of the most symbolic band in the extreme music universe, one of the darker stars in the Norwegian black metal galaxy. But the business out there is nasty, and the intelligent attitude of Satyr and Frost is often misunderstood, badged, or wrongly rated. So, having had a very deep and interesting chat with Frost back in 2015 (read here), “Live At The Opera” age, I continued discussing our topics, going deeper, going further. We ranged from the new album to the scene, from the friendship behind the band to health, life and vision of both past and future, present included. Frost preferred to be interviewed outside, in the warm sun of a warmer early autumn, and he almost gave me more answers than the amount of questions I asked. I Fight The Fight attirarono la mia attenzione quando hanno pubblicato il loro album di debutto qualche mese fa. Sono giovani, dinamici e 100% schizofrenici. Sorprendentemente si sono uniti al tour autunnale dei Satyricon, offrendomi l’opportunità di vederli dal vivo a Bologna, qualcosa che desideravo davvero fare. Ma la mitica Indie Recordings mi ha offerto pure di incontrarli per una intervista, così dopo aver parlato con Frost, mi sono seduto con questi ragazzi, giusto per accertarmi fossero veramente pazzi e non solo facessero finta. Beh, non sono solo pazzi, sono completamente fuori di testa… pronti a far festa, ma focalizzati al 100% sulla loro arte e la loro band. Se questo è ciò che le nuove generazioni ci offrono, beh, allora il metal sopravviverà ancora molti anni. Godetevi la nostra strana conversazione! (read it in English) (altro…)
